  • Welcome to Our Journal

    Keith is a photographer who believes that kids are nearly perfect and that great images capture a bit of that perfection for all eternity. He loves that children don’t filter their emotions. Living loud is their power. And his job is to capture a moment of their uncontained imaginations: your children, unscripted.

    Melissa is the studio manager, adoring wife, busy mom and occasional writer that believes she is living the most beautiful life in the whole world.

    Keith and Melissa have two amazing daughters, Isabella and Gabriella and a little Jack Russell named Pooch.

    This journal is our personal blog about our family, photography, travel and how we are inspired by children in all their authenticity, one beautiful photograph at a time.

A Little Butterfly | Newborn Photography

newborn photographers phoenix

How precious is this little baby butterfly? So beautiful.

Certainly not a photograph in Keith’s usual improvisational style – but newborns don’t run around a lot! :)

It’s amazing how special a newborn session is. Babies can’t be rushed nor should they be. They are going at their own pace – after all these sessions usually happen within the first two weeks of life – so the babies are just so new. Their whole world revolves around eating, sleeping and cuddling with mom – and of course looking adorable for photos! These precious first few weeks are a must to document. The wrinkles, how they scrunch up into these positions, how they can barely open their eyes, how small they are – will be hard to recollect. Grab a camera and start documenting or hire a professional photographer, but make sure you get these photos, you will not regret it for a second.

More from this session will be on the blog tomorrow.

Maternity, Birth + Newborn | Newborn Birth Photography

maternity photographer scottsdalebirth photography scottsdale arizonabirth photography phoenix scottsdalebirth photography scottsdalenewborn baby photographerThis is a really brief synopsis of three really beautiful sessions. This family had a full maternity session that was just stunning. This is my favorite shot from the session. Hard to believe that little tiny baby in that beautiful pregnant belly eventually turns into this adorable baby girl!

{I remember when I was pregnant for the first time and as the months went along, all I could think of is that this baby HAS to come out of me somehow. Yikes! It’s a scary thought especially if you would have seen how huge my stomach was!}

Baby M was born at Scottsdale Osborn. The doctor didn’t want Keith in the delivery room – but he was able to document everything else about the birth – including this brand new baby photos all swaddled and screaming. These are just a few shots, but there is such a beautiful story told from that morning. Precious to mom and dad.

{My favorite photos in the entire world are the one’s taken by Keith during both my labor/deliveries. They are incredible. I know birth photography is not for everyone, but those memories, those photos are so dear to my heart. Priceless is not even a strong enough word for how valuable these photos are to me as a mom!}

The last series of photos are from Baby M’s newborn session. She was just under 2 weeks old (the ideal time to do a newborn session). It is so hard to remember them ever being this tiny. Fitting in a drawer when you were a baby? Wow! Who can remember your child being that small?

{Now my 9 year old is wearing the same size shoe as me and just went over 5′ tall. I love looking back at these photos from when she was tiny. Time goes entirely too quickly and that’s what photographs do – preserve memories!!!}

Love this family and we are so honored that we are there for these precious milestones!

I want to take great photographs | Personal

For years now I have told myself over and over that I want to take beautiful photos. I would love to work alongside Keith as a second photographer or even have a little niche for myself within our business. But for some reason, even though I have Keith to help me with all things photography, I just haven’t taken that first step.

Keith has always encouraged me to pick up the camera. He leaves one of his extra Canons sitting out for me and has kind words to say  about my potential but he always says that I will when I want to. Well I finally want to. So the above photos were taken by me (NOT KEITH – so those of you that are planning on hiring him to photograph your family, this is not what you are going to get!!!) on a recent trip to California.

This is my first attempt, I had the camera with me all day at the beach. I just picked a handful of what I thought were the best from this series of photos. I put them in Lightroom, had some issues (I know Keith is shaking his head right now!), so I abandoned doing any work to them, EXCEPT I converted a few to black and white). I’m going to say what I think went right or wrong with each photo and encourage people to chime in with their opinions.beach photographyI love the kids running in and out of the water. I like this photo, but it’s missing something, not sure what. I thought it looked better as black & white.  kids beach photographyGabby looks adorable BUT she isn’t sharp. I probably snapped a little too late (or early) not seeing if she was in clear focus – this is just a snapshot because of that. If her face had been more sharp, I would LOVE this photo.  I like Bella in the background, but think the composition of this photo could use some help.beach photography californiaI was looking at this scene and loving how everyone was doing different things. There are bubbles coming down from the pier above, kids are trying to pop them. Gabby is running. People are interacting. It’s a little dark and I wish Gabby was more pronounced somehow.  beach photography californiaI saw this surfer walking across the beach. He looked so focused coming out of the water. I like his shadow. I like the bird, but if  it had been a little higher int he sky. Or maybe it would look better if the bird was out of the picture. Not sure.beach photography san diegoLike this beach scene as we were walking off the pier. I like the time of day, I like how the people are scattered and I like the coast line. I converted it to black and white but I also liked it in color.kids beach photographyI saw the girls standing there and I loved their shadow. It was so perfect. I should have taken more than one frame, because they aren’t in focus or they are not sharp and they are making odd faces. If I could do it again, I would have waited for them maybe to be looking at me – and I would have done a better job of sharpening them up.beach photographyLove this pier. Love the light. Overall I like the direction this photo was going. Well I’m taking this seriously now. I really, really want to become a photographer. I look at Keith’s (and all sorts of other great photographer’s) photos and I’m inspired. Working alongside him I definitely get to pick up little things all the time. It is all sinking in. Practice makes perfect (and some technical knowledge can’t hurt either!). Stay tuned cause this camera is coming with me everywhere.

Le Roi des Frites Paris | Ketchup Face | Family Travels

ketchup faceEvery time we need to look through our archives for a Lightroom catalog to place an order for a client we undoubtedly come across a long lost photo of one of our kids that stops us in our tracks. It’s so hard to not look. Yes, we would be more productive if we weren’t side tracked by photos of our cute little kids. But it’s a worthwhile use of time (I tell myself).

Keith came across this shot of Gabby from our trip to Paris – nearly 2 years ago. He called the photo “Ketchup face” – I wonder why? Look at this kid. I could squeeze her through the computer she is so darn cute. Of course, a photo like this takes me right back to that very moment. We had rented an apartment in the 2nd arrondissement in Paris for a month two summers ago (already!!). There was this Belgian chip shop on the corner, right near the closest Metro stop – we had to pass on our way back to the apartment.  De Clercq had the best (French? Belgian?) fries – hard to pass by without grabbing the kilo of fries for 5 euro. Gabby adored them. They had lots of great dipping sauces but her favorite was – ketchup. As you can see from the photo!

I’m thinking now of all the fun we had that month.  How beautiful Paris is. How I would love to be there right now. So many great memories. Thank you to this photo for reminding me of that day – and our family adventure.

Looking forward to this year’s trip: July in Sicily.

Happy Birthday! | Family Photographer Scottsdale

birthday photography scottsdale00180019kids photography scottsdaleWell here’s a session that should have been shared awhile ago. This family is some of our favorite people. Time just flies. Maybe we have been working together for several years already, is that possible? When we first met this couple at their wedding, this beautiful young woman was just a little girl. And now fast forward, they have added a little sister that is probably just a hair over 2 by now. Anyway, I digress, as I tend to do. Mom wanted to do something special for her daughter’s birthday. What could be more special than your own photo shoot? Happy Birthday Tara!
