  • Welcome to Our Journal

Keith is a photographer who believes that kids are nearly perfect and that great images capture a bit of that perfection for all eternity. He loves that children don’t filter their emotions. Living loud is their power. And his job is to capture a moment of their uncontained imaginations: your children, unscripted.

Melissa is the studio manager, adoring wife, busy mom and occasional writer that believes she is living the most beautiful life in the whole world.

Keith and Melissa have two amazing daughters, Isabella and Gabriella and a little Jack Russell named Pooch.

This journal is our personal blog about our family, photography, travel and how we are inspired by children in all their authenticity, one beautiful photograph at a time.

I love this little girl | Phoenix Children’s Photographer

It probably seems like Gabby makes more appearances than Isabella on this blog. The plain truth is that she really doesn’t mind her photo being taken so Keith gets many more natural opportunities to photograph her being herself. With Bella, she sees the camera and either puts on a face or tries to hide. Hard to believe, she is such a beautiful little girl but is not a fan of the camera.

I was just looking through some images to put a blog post together for a recent children’s portrait session and I came across this test roll of film that Keith had taken about a year ago. This photo speaks to me as Gabby’s mom. It is just so her. I wasn’t even with Keith when he took this photo but I can guess that it is after school. She decided to wear one of her lovely outfits that she puts together herself – her sister’s old ballet leotard from years ago accompanied by her socks and sandals – how European!

She is her usual disheveled after school self and I love every inch of her.

Spring Break Road Trip | the kids Love it when Daddy has a Destination Portrait Session in California!

children's photographer scottsdale

So happy when we have work in fun destinations. This past week, we were lucky enough to photograph a beautiful family of three girls in Manhattan Beach. I love this town. How have we never been to this outpost of LA before now?

Look forward to sharing this session! Stay tuned for a new product offering that goes along with it!

Well whenever we have a destination portrait session or really any job that requires us to travel, we do our best to bring the kids along. Fortunately for us, last week was spring break, so the kids were happy to take a trip to the ocean!

The ride from Phoenix to LA (yes a stop was needed at Samy’s to buy some film) was really low key. The kids were so good about reading, drawing, drawing and reading. They loved driving through LA, seeing the Hollywood stars on the sidewalk, identifying some familiar studios and just really feeling the vibe of the city.

We actually stayed in Long Beach. It worked out perfectly, we came into town a few days early to give the kids a chance to do the touristy thing. Stop 1 – the Queen Mary. Isabella has had a crush on the Titanic tragedy for well over a year. In fact, last year, it was bordering on obsessive. She watched the movie what seemed like a gazillion times, read every book she could get her hands on and even went so far as to plan a Titanic party to celebrate the 100th anniversary last year. Needless to say, she wanted to check the Queen Mary out in person. I know the ships were built close to 30 years apart, but a big grandiose ship is a good starting point for her to feel a little kinship with the sea.

Stop 2 was for Gabby: The Aquarium of the Pacific. Gabby took a million pictures of fish, sharks, jelly fish. She touched everything they allowed her to, scoured every exhibit and wanted to double back and do it all over again. Boy she loves her animals/sea life. Somehow we escaped out of the aquarium without her mandatory gift shop stop. Incredible. All four of us really enjoyed it. Give it a try if you find yourself in Long Beach!

Delicious breakfast at The Crema Cafe in Seal Beach (delicious breakfast crepes, even Gabby ate one!!), fun at the beach, afternoon at the swimming pool and we were even able to catch up with friends that had moved from Scottsdale to LA. So much wrapped into just a few days.

Looking forward to our next trip back to California in June!

Keith photographed this beautiful party a few weeks ago at Paula Jacqueline Cakes and Pastries in Old Town Scottsdale. Such an awesome idea for a birthday party! PJ has a beautiful space in her bakery that is just perfect for a party. The kids had a blast decorating the delicious cakes, sipping their lemonade and enjoying the amazing sweets. Who wouldn’t love this as a birthday party????

Let’s thank all the vendors that made this party so perfect:

Oceanside Pier California | B&W Film Photography

Beach Photography California

The wooded pier in Oceanside, California was a huge hit with the kids on our last trip to California. They loved the long walk out over the water. So many sights to see. A large pelican sat on a trash can close enough to touch. A guy was making really large soapy bubbles and the kids loved seeing them float out over the beach, trying to pop them as they floated over the rail. People fishing. Lots of activity and people everywhere you looked.

Down below the pier things were a bit more serene. The kids ran in and out of the water, jumping through the waves, just laughing and running, running and laughing. They ended up getting soaked and not even caring that I didn’t even have a towel with me.

Keith captured this photo of Gabby as we were about to leave the beach.

It never fails to astound me how purely magical the ocean is. The energy. The renewal. The feeling that you can do anything. Time stands still at the beach.

Children at the beach personifies all the beauty of childhood.

Camera: Zeiss Ikon ZI Film: Kodak Tri-X

(note from Keith A fellow photographer mentioned that this photograph reminded them of the well known photo Child with Toy Hand Grenade by Diane Arbus. While not my intention when taking the photo, any comparisons to a photographer as great as Diane Arbus will always be appreciated whether or not deserved.)

A Beautiful Afternoon in NYC | New York City Family Portrait Photographer

This family was visiting NYC from London and wanted to document a bit of their special visit – a little slice of their time in the Big Apple. There is nothing Keith enjoys more than spending some quality time with a sweet family: exploring and documenting.

Manhattan is awesome for kids. There are so many treats for the senses: cars honking, throngs of pedestrians rushing along the sidewalks, smells of vendor carts, bright yellow cabs, parks, parking lots, garages, lots of loud noises and colors whirling by. A child has so much to take in. It’s just incredible.

I guess this family is probably used to a different type of hustle and bustle, but a big city none the less.

So honored that they allowed us to capture this special time together – a beautiful unscripted family session in NYC.
