  • Welcome to Our Journal

Keith is a photographer who believes that kids are nearly perfect and that great images capture a bit of that perfection for all eternity. He loves that children don’t filter their emotions. Living loud is their power. And his job is to capture a moment of their uncontained imaginations: your children, unscripted.

Melissa is the studio manager, adoring wife, busy mom and occasional writer that believes she is living the most beautiful life in the whole world.

Keith and Melissa have two amazing daughters, Isabella and Gabriella and a little Jack Russell named Pooch.

This journal is our personal blog about our family, photography, travel and how we are inspired by children in all their authenticity, one beautiful photograph at a time.

Isabella turns 7 | birth photography

“Of all the rights of women. The greatest is to be a mother.” – Lin Yutang

When I look at the beautiful little girl that Isabella has grown into, my heart hurts. I love that little girl so much. How could seven years have passed in the blink of an eye?

I remember the first contraction (I was getting a manicure), calling the doctor (meconium, yikes!), the drive to the hospital, walking up and down the hospital corridors, pain, contraction, pain. Keith was documenting everything. My sister, mom and mother-in-law drove up from Manhattan and were stuck in horrible rush hour traffic. But they made it. Just in time to go out to dinner and order me a turkey sandwich for after the delivery!

The time seemed to pass both slowly and quickly all at the same time.

Then it was time.

The hard labor was a big blur. Epidural. Effaced. Dilated. All these words that meant Isabella was about to enter this world. Pushing. Pushing. And then Isabella’s blood pressure dropped. My amazing mid wife was able to deliver this beautiful baby safely with the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck. She was fine. I was fine. The midwife held her up and she looked so perfectly perfect. I cried. I just couldn’t believe it.

I was overcome with emotion for this little baby that I had yet to hold but had carried with me for 41 weeks.

Those perfect little red rosebud lips, the swollen eyes, those feet that looked just like Keith’s, that pink soft skin, that delicious newborn baby smell, my little baby – all 6lbs 9oz of her. She had arrived.

The birth. You can never imagine how valuable these photos are to me.  I choke up every time I look back at these images. The memories immediately come flooding back. I’m reminded of what I may have forgotten. All the details of the most important day of my life.

If I could give one gift to anyone I know who is pregnant, it would be the gift of birth photography. Thank you Keith. (well for more than just the pictures!)

And before I forget….Happy Birthday Isabella!

La Petite Magazine | kids style magazines

La Petite Magazine is an absolutely stunning online publication that captures the beauty of childhood in a variety of ways. I just loved this feature from their current issue – this doll is so cool and the picture with the camera is just too cute.  Inside the pages of this magazine, you will find great photography, illustrations, features, recommendations – all centered around children!

Below is an excerpt taken from their website – gives you an idea about the goal of the magazine.

About La Petite

Welcome to La Petite Magazine!  Thanks for joining us as we pioneer a new avenue of inspiration for you!  We’re bubbling with excitement to share with you everything extraordinary for the little one in your life…including fashion, design, DIY projects, unforgettable stories, and other helpful ingredients to make your life even more rich!

Like the strokes of a paintbrush, our desire at La Petite is to inspire you to create on the canvas of motherhood.  As we recall our childhoods, the most memorable of moments seem drenched in the smell of our grandmother’s perfume, in the bright colors of our favorite sundress, or in the nursery rhyme that we can still remember word for word…accompanied by the silly motions that were choreographed by our silly fathers.  Now, we get to wear the hat of the beloved mum & the constructor of memories.  Our desire is that you put on this hat (dare I say it, probably a ultra chic fedora hat) with the creativity, imagination, and inspiration of a master painter.  It’s your life, make it beautiful!

The sweet song of summer | children’s documentary style portrait photography

“In Summer, the song sings iteself.” – William Carlos Williams

Well, the end of summer is here. At least on the calendar, anyway.

It may still be 110 here in the desert, but it is time to put away the white. Summer is officially over.

June, July and August were full of friends, family, travel and all of the things that make summer so special.

This is one of my favorite photos from our summer.  It sums up the carefree and joyful nature of the past few months. The girls are engrossed in their environment, privileged by the freedom childhood offers.

The sweetness of summer.

a new baby | newborn baby photographer scottsdale

A new baby is like the beginning of all things – wonder, hope, a dream of possibilities – Eda J Le Shan

A new baby is such a wonder. So small, so delicate – yet so resilient. Beautiful. A little miracle. A new beginning.

When Isabella our first born was just a few hours old, I remember the nurse handing her to me. I stared at her, the beautiful red lips, perfect little face, skinny little legs. I just could not believe that she was mine, in my care forevermore. What started as a positive pregnancy test was now laying next to me in a hospital bed – WOW!

So when we have the privilege of photographing a newborn, I am immediately in awe of mom and baby. The wonder the mom has when she is staring into her little baby’s eyes. I admire the bond, the absolute beauty of the relationship.

Looking in those adorable little eyes, imagining the possibilities…

Making the decision to have a child is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body. Elizabeth Stone

Every time we have a maternity session, I find myself becoming nostalgic. I loved being pregnant. It is such a special, magical time in a woman’s life. It is the beginning of an adventure, a love affair with the little one that is growing on the inside.

I remember when I first found out I was pregnant. I just couldn’t believe it when the two plus signs on my pregnancy test matched up. I just couldn’t believe that I could be lucky enough to be pregnant. I always wanted to be a mom and now that I was married to the greatest guy in the whole world (that’s you Keith) – it just seemed like a dream come true. But one test was not enough. I bought several tests, all different brands. And imagine…they were all positive. Hmmm, a bit obsessive? I know Keith is shaking his head yes right now! But so hard for me to believe that this could be real!

So when I am along to assist on a maternity session, I have such an internal happiness for the mom-to-be. Maybe it’s also a yearning somewhere inside me to be right back at that moment, not knowing what to expect but knowing that you are going to love with all your heart that little one inside you.

The joy was evident in this first time mom-to-be. Her happiness radiated. A gorgeous belly filled with two little hearts that I imagine she has already fallen in love with. She will be able to look back at these images and remember the beauty of carrying a child, one of the greatest chapters in this family’s history.
