  • Welcome to Our Journal

Keith is a photographer who believes that kids are nearly perfect and that great images capture a bit of that perfection for all eternity. He loves that children don’t filter their emotions. Living loud is their power. And his job is to capture a moment of their uncontained imaginations: your children, unscripted.

Melissa is the studio manager, adoring wife, busy mom and occasional writer that believes she is living the most beautiful life in the whole world.

Keith and Melissa have two amazing daughters, Isabella and Gabriella and a little Jack Russell named Pooch.

This journal is our personal blog about our family, photography, travel and how we are inspired by children in all their authenticity, one beautiful photograph at a time.

“The love of a family is life’s greatest blessing” – Joseph Addison

When this mom called to book her session, she mentioned that she would like the session to take place where she and her husband were married. I fell in love with the idea. How meaningful.

What could be more recollective and full of fond memories then having a family portrait session with your two beautiful children at such a significant location in your family’s history?

You can believe, wish, hope, foretell, envision or presume what life is going to be like when you imagine your future. To see the result of this vision – two children running around so obviously enjoying being together with their unique personalities shining through with every stride, every laugh, every hug. To be where it all began!

Several important events in one’s life define who we are and what we become. In this case, it began in this very spot with a marriage. Children, the next chapter in this family’s story.

Capturing this family interacting, documenting their love and happiness in such an honest way is an honor. To me as a mom, it is these memories, watching the children grow and show off their developing personalities that have such a place in the heart.

Elizabeth Martin Design | Interior Design Inspiration

interior design beth martin

My next weekly installment of Interior Design Inspiration is Elizabeth Martin Design. Again, my requirements for being featured are 1. I like the designer’s style and 2. the designer features photography prominently (we like that a lot!)

Elizabeth Martin Design fulfills both requirements beautifully!

Based in San Francisco, Elizabeth Martin Design specializes in residential interior design.   “..the spaces she designs are as varied and individual as the clients she works with – using classic lines, rich textures, eclectic juxtapositions, and both subtle and bold color choices. The emphasis is on beauty, sophistication, and comfort. “The places we live in should be sanctuaries,” she says. “I want to create environments where people can truly feel at home with themselves and then go out into the world recharged.” Beth Martin

Well said!

Children are the sum of what mother’s contribute to their lives – Unknown

Ok…and dads too.

We may think that our children are never listening to us but they are taking it all in. Moments that seem inconsequential at the time could end up being a fond memory that stays with a child forever and ever. Seeing two children reflect the independence, kindness and joy of childhood is beautiful and I never tire of seeing it. This family portrait session above encompassed all that and more.

I cherish the first image. I know that some people prefer a posed “perfect” family shot – but this photo is a treasure.  This is a shot that will evoke lots of memories for mom – now and 20 years down the road.

When I peruse photographs of our family or just the girls, I want the photograph to take me right back to the moment it was taken. I love to remember. I love to hear Gabby’s laughter.  I love to remember Isabella’s pout that has not changed in nearly 7 years. I love to remember the good and the bad, the joy as well as the tears. I love to remember who my children were and still are.

I love that by looking at the few images in this post, you are able to gain insight into who these children are. Joking. Whimsy. Playful. Sincere. Thoughtful. Introspective. Caring. Happy. …Love.

The sum of a child’s memory bank.

Carrier and Company | Interior Design Inspiration

Two things that are just fun to look at (in my humble opinion) are great photographs and cool style blogs! I could easily pass hours and hours just looking at Lonny Magazine, TradHome and the plethora of interior design/style blogs for trend alerts, industry contributors and editor picks! I just love it when I come across interior design that incorporates photography. There are so many great interior decorators out there, but to see photography highlighted is definitely a style we embrace!

In my many hours of ogling the gorgeous styles that adorn blog after blog, I like to jot down designers that seem to incorporate photography pretty heavily in their portfolios. I’ve decided to feature my favorites.

Here is today’s find: Carrier and Company

Carrier and Company Interiors Ltd. principals, Jesse Carrier and Mara Miller, are a husband and wife design duo with a combined total of 20 years experience working with New York’s premier design firms before opening their own in 2005.

Clients include Anna Wintour – Vogue, Bob Pittman, Jane Rosenthal, Jay Fielden – Town and Country and Jason Wu to name a few. Their work has been published in Elle Decor,The World of InteriorsVogueTraditional HomeTown and CountryW, and House Beautiful .

In 2010, Carrier and Company made Elle Decor’s “A LIST” of 30 Designers, one of 5 Designers to Watch.

What they do:

Our mission is to connect people with place, and believe this is the key to developing a successful interior that is not only beautiful, but a deeply personal reflection of its occupants. Using a confident mix of history, contemporary design, comfort and grace we are able to achieve interiors that are chic and timeless — both familiar and fresh at once. A truly personalized interior takes shape when client’s collections, artwork, heirlooms, taste and personality are incorporated into the design.

Ultimately, interiors are not just spaces for living, but living spaces — and by grounding them in layers of color and texture, Carrier and Company produces highly detailed, yet comfortable and personalized spaces.
